This paper formalizes a tradeoff between experienced well-being and the refinement of wants. Drawing on Knight and Schopenhauer, it shows that pursuing higher standards raises the benchmarks against which outcomes are judged, so that improvements yield only fleeting satisfaction. Lives of ambitious striving may thus be better yet less happy, a result with implications for welfare measurement in connection with economic-political reforms.
