Do Coups Create Economic Crises? Evidence from Latin America and the Caribbean

Previous studies have treated economic crisis as causes of coup attempts but theoretical considerations suggest that coups may also cause crises. Across 200 coups in Latin America and the Caribbean between 1920 and 2022, civilian-led coups and coups toppling autocracies significantly and substantially increase the likelihood of entering an economic crisis.
