Taxation and Society

Taxes play a central role in all modern, industrialized societies. They finance public welfare and infrastructure, and they redistribute between groups in the population. Taxes also influence the decisions of companies and individuals in areas such as investment, savings, labor supply, education and career choices, and thus ultimately affect cyclical fluctuations as well as the long-term growth potential of the economy.

The demand for Sweden's tax system to be internationally competitive is increasing as the world's countries become more integrated, and the research program wants to investigate the consequences of this for Swedish companies and the Swedish economy.

The research program "Taxation and Society" aims to increase knowledge of the importance of taxes for the Swedish economy. Particular focus is placed on issues relating to the situation and functioning of the business sector, such as the taxation of large and small companies, different forms of ownership or the interaction between labor and capital taxation. However, the program will also study the behavior of workers in terms of how taxes affect their willingness to educate themselves, to work hard or to provide protection against negative income shocks.

The main objective of the program is to produce research of high international quality that is published in reputable scientific journals. This is a prerequisite for the success of the program’s second objective: to generate new knowledge concerning the effects of taxes in Sweden and to disseminate this knowledge at seminars, conferences and other contexts where tax issues are discussed.
