The study examines how Swedish exports to Russia and the surrounding region have developed since the Russian invasion. Focus is placed on a list compiled by the G7 countries of sanctioned goods with potential military applications.
Sanctions have become an increasingly important tool in international trade policy, but their actual effects on trade flows remain only partially understood. The broader aim of the project is to contribute knowledge about the effectiveness of sanctions and their possible side effects—insights that are crucial for understanding their role as an economic instrument of pressure in an increasingly fragmented global economy.
Swedish exports to Russian border states after the introduction of the export restrictions against Russia
In response to the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, export restrictions to Russia have been introduced, including by the EU. However, it is sometimes claimed in public debate that these restrictions are being circumvented by countries that reduce their direct exports to Russia and instead increase their exports to Russia’s neighboring countries, which then re-export these goods to Russia. The aim of this project is to examine whether there is any evidence that Swedish exports display such a pattern.
