Attitudes Toward Cooperation and the Effects of External Events

The liberal democratic world order rests on several underlying values. These include free and fair elections, freedom of speech, the rule of law, free trade, and the free movement of people. On a broader level, it also concerns trust, cooperation, and the role of the market.

We investigate the underlying factors that shape these attitudes and values. Of particular interest is how these attitudes change in response to domestic or international events. One example is our study of how Trump’s first, and unexpected, presidential election victory affected Europeans’ attitudes. We find that the net effect was a strengthening of liberal attitudes toward globalization and immigration among Europeans. Trump’s return to the presidency with an expansive agenda has influenced both attitudes and behaviors—effects we aim to understand better.
This project helps us understand how changes in fundamental values and attitudes influence the behavior of individuals and nations. One example of how attitudes affect individual behavior is the decline in Tesla car sales in many Western countries following Elon Musk’s political involvement.
