The Political Economy of Academic Freedom

Since comprehensive data became available five years ago, a literature about academic freedom has emerged. This paper surveys studies on the causes and consequences of academic freedom. The new literature finds that it is positively associated with democracy, multi-party politics, as well as innovation and productivity development.
