Press Freedom, Market Information, and International Trade

Does quality information affect international trade? We show theoretically how firms, in the absence of trustworthy information, may restrict their export activity. Exploring bilateral export flows across a group of Western and Latin American countries, we find evidence that reduced press freedom strongly reduces exports flows to autocracies.
