Economic growth in Timor-Leste (formerly East Timor) has displayed dramatic volatility since the country´s independence in 2002. The first few years were characterized by negative or extremely low growth, which improved steadily to reach very high levels as public expenditure increased after political turbolence in 2006. This was followed by stagnation during the six years leading up to 2016.
